From the end of the Muromachi period onward, the aristocratic elite and the emperor, as well as Kyoto's upper middle class, were passionate about keeping the memory of, and even encouraging the return of, the "high culture" of the Heian period alive. Two artists kept up this beautiful tradition during the Edo period. Tawaraya Sōtatsu (late 16th - circa 1643) returned to the style and processes of the Heian period, collaborating with the artist Hon'ami Kōetsu, best known for his calligraphy and lacquerwork.
